Wisdom Teeth Extraction

When it comes to wisdom teeth extraction, we are the experts. This is our most common procedure.

Wisdom teeth removal frequently will involve a surgical procedure, particularly if they are “impacted”; that is, not visible or only partially visible in your mouth.

Wisdom teeth removal may be indicated for various reasons, including: impaction, crowding/overlapping of teeth, infection, decay, cyst formation and/or damage to adjacent teeth.

Surgical removal of wisdom teeth will alleviate pain and discomfort and may help prevent all the potential complications mentioned previously.

Some younger patients may also consider preventative removal of their wisdom teeth in order to avoid these problems later in life. This is often wise as young people tend to recover faster from their surgery and with fewer risks.

Dental Implants & Grafting

Our surgeons are highly experienced dental implantologists. At Max Oral Surgery we will utilise 3D technology and implant planning to ensure precision placement. This will help to ensure an optimised aesthetic and functional result is achieved.

Bone grafting is frequently undertaken to help augment the bony foundation and support for the dental implants in your jaw. This may be performed either before or during your dental implant placement.

Dental implant surgery is one of the options utilized to replace missing teeth, and they are considered to be the most effective and durable solution for tooth replacement.

We will perform all the surgical aspects of your treatment, and work in conjunction with your referring dentist/prosthodontist/periodontist to deliver the final aesthetic and functional result.

Corrective Jaw Surgery (Orthognathic Surgery)

Orthognathic surgery, also known as corrective jaw surgery, refers to the operations performed to correct various imbalances of the jaws and facial structures. These structural issues can affect one’s ability to chew, speak, and breathe, as well as cause an unfavourable facial appearance.

Orthognathic surgery aims to correct these problems by repositioning the bony structures of the face.

Corrective jaw surgery can be performed on the top jaw only, bottom jaw only, or both jaws simultaneously.

The surgery is planned in conjunction with an orthodontist, who aligns the teeth to help achieve the most stable and functional bite during and after surgery.

Virtual surgical planning, utilizing the latest 3D technology is performed for all procedures.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Surgery

The paired Temporomandibular Joints (TMJs) connect your mandible (lower jaw) to your skull. These paired joints are crucial for functions such as chewing, speaking and swallowing. Like any joint in your body, they are prone to problems such as pain, locking or limited function.

Surgery is usually a last resort and may be considered when conservative treatments like night-guards, physiotherapy and lifestyle changes have not provided sufficient relief.

Surgery may be minimally invasive, such as arthrocentesis (joint washout with steroid injection), however for more severe cases open joint surgery may be required.

For conditions such as severe arthritis, joint degeneration or tumours of the joint - total joint replacement with a custom-fit titanium artificial joint may be necessary.

Dr Thomas, who has received subspecialty training in TMJ surgery, is a leading expert in this field.

Facial Fracture Surgery

Facial fracture surgery refers to procedures to repair fractures involving the mandible (bottom jaw), maxilla (top jaw), zygomas (cheekbones), orbits (eye sockets), frontal bone (forehead) or nasal bones.

These injuries can result from a variety of causes, including: motor vehicle accidents, falls, sports injuries, interpersonal violence and other traumatic insults sustained to the facial bones.

Facial trauma surgery aims to restore function, aesthetics and overall well-being by repairing and reconstructing the affected areas of the face. There are various treatment options available, ranging from close observation to open reduction and internal fixation using titanium plates and screws under general anaesthesia.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) Surgery

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Snoring is a frequent problem which can result in the person not experiencing a refreshing night’s sleep.

It is due to partial or complete blockage of a person’s upper airways during their sleep.

This may be treated without surgery using a MAS (Mandibular Advancement Splint), which postures your lower jaw in a more forward position. Or, alternatively with a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airways Pressure) device, which also helps to hold open your upper airways.

Frequently people are unable to tolerate the above measures and will seek a surgical correction. The gold standard surgical correction is a Bimaxillary Osteotomy, which is a Corrective Jaw Surgery Procedure which will reposition your upper and lower jaws in a more forward position, providing an instant benefit in most cases.
